The Spence-Chapin Adoption Service was formed in 1943 by the merger of two independent nurseries for abandoned infants - the Chapin Nursery, established by Dr. and Mrs. Henry Chapin and the Spence Alumnae Society, established by Clara Spence and the alumnae of the Spence School. Both nurseries were founded in the early 1900s.
